Abstract: Current theoretical arguments predict that an increase in the mass transfer rate from the donor star in a tidally unstable cataclysmic variable leads to circularization of the outer disc orbits and suppresses the appearance of superhumps. However, observations of the stream-impact region during the 2001 outburst of WZ Sagittae suggest that the mass transfer rate increased dramatically with no adverse effect on the superhumps. I discuss the two sides of this apparent contradiction and introduce some results from high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of the interaction of an accretion stream with a disc.
