Abstract: Two recent computational treatments of the nonlinear interaction between convection and magnetic fields are described and contrasted. The first is a sequence of numerical experiments on an idealized model of three-dimensional compressible magnetoconvection, with an emphasis on changes in the magnetic field structure and the velocity pattern as the strength of the imposed field is reduced. The second is a two-dimensional simulation of the formation and evolution of a highly dynamical magnetic flux sheet, in a realistic model of the solar photosphere. The results are related to high-resolution observations of fine structure in sunspots and to the behaviour of intergranular magnetic fields.
