Abstract: Changes in the astrophysical interpretations of Delta Scuti stars have followed closely on the heels of major observational and theoretical developments. The review examines the connection between observations and astrophysical interpretations of Delta Scuti variability over the last 50 years. The following topics are emphasized: 1. The Radial Era 2. The Tidal and USPV Hypotheses 3. Are the variations irregular or multiperiodic? 4. Radial period ratios of large-amplitude variables 5. Hundreds of modes: the Nonradial Mixed Mode Era Finally, recent results on selected Delta Scuti stars, showing more than 20 detected modes, are presented together with their astrophysical interpretations.
