Abstract: In dealing with period changes in variable stars there are two distinct problems to consider. The first is testing the significance level of possible period changes. The second is the extraction of the precise form of period changes which may be present in the data. An important consideration in both these problems is the presence of small random variations in the period which are intrinsic to the star. The approaches taken are rather different for long-period variables (for which most cycles are covered) and short-period variables (in which most cycles are unobserved).
