Abstract: We present the results of our photometric and spectroscopic study of the unusual infrared-excess Li-rich giant HD 233517. Photometric monitoring shows the star to be a low-amplitude variable with a period of 47.9 days. The Li abundance derived from the resonance line is lower than that derived from the 6103 AA excited line by 0.7 dex, with the latter producing a super-meteoritic abundance of log epsilon(Li) = 4.0. The two abundance values are not reconciled when non-LTE processes in a standard atmosphere are considered. Several other ways to reconcile the differences are investigated but none is fully satisfactory yet. A cursory inspection of other Li-rich giants shows a similar effect is seen in at least one other giant, but the difference is not directly related to the level of chromospheric activity.
