Abstract: We discuss results of recent calculations of the thermal structure of accretion funnels heated externally by hard and soft X-rays, and relate them to observations of AM Herculis systems. The calculations determine self-consistently the thermal structure, and the continuum and line emission, allowing for transfer of the external radiation field, for scattering, and for the trapping of radiation within the funnel. It also appear that an additional source of heating occurs near the base of the accretion funnel in the region where matter couples onto field lines. The implied magnetic heating can affect the thermal structure of the funnel someway above the orbital plane and allow the formation of He II emission lines.
