Abstract: The temperature structure in the outer layers of model stellar atmospheres is usually determined by means of the equation of radiative equilibrium. Here we present an alternative approach accounting for the equation of thermal balance, which has been widely used for studies of planetary nebulae. Both methods are compared. It turns out that the application of electron thermal balance is faster in all considered cases, including white dwarf atmospheres.
