Abstract: We review the spectroscopic observations of polar plumes obtained with the SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) spectrometer on SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory), both on the disk in polar coronal holes, and above the limb. Several of the results, discussed here, have provided important clues to the structure and dynamics of polar plumes, and their relationship to other coronal structures and the solar wind.
