Abstract: I discuss various pieces of observational evidence for the hypothesis that the relation between dust absorption and gas absorption in AGN is different than in the ``standard'' Galactic case. This property might imply a mismatch between optical and X-ray classification of AGN in terms of their absorption. I also discuss the possible scenarios which might be responsible for the peculiar properties of dust in AGN. In particular, I will focus on the possible formation of large grains as a consequence of coagulation in low-luminosity AGN, and on grain destruction as a consequence of the strong radiation pressure in high-luminosity AGN.
