Abstract: Observations of the large scale magnetic field in the photosphere taken at the Wilcox Solar Observatory from 1976 up to 2006 have been analyzed to deduce the topology of the mean latitudinal magnetic field and its variability in time over cycles 21, 22, and 23. The origin and the North–South asymmetry of the four-zonal and polarity-waves structures were studied.
