Abstract: The structure and geometry of moats surrounding decaying sunspots are probably closely related to the structure of the magnetic flux tubes in the upper 2–3 Mm beneath the sunspot photosphere. An understanding of this relationship offers important clues about β, the ratio of gas pressure to magnetic pressure, in rising magnetic flux tubes before they encounter the overlying photosphere. This could provide deep insight into the physics of the solar dynamo.
