Abstract: We present the observations of an active region jet originating from the east side of NOAA 8531 on May 15 1999. The observations include a series of TRACE 171 Å filtergrams, and simultaneous observations from SUMER in Ne VIII, 770 Å, C IV 1548 Å, as well as MDI magnetograms. The observations were compared with the results of a 3D MHD numerical simulation of magnetic flux emergence and its subsequent reconnection with preexisting magnetic flux. The numerical simulation reproduces the observed 100 km/s outflow at the right temperature range (0.6 – 1×106 Kelvin). Moreover, the observations seem to suggest that the jet plasma falls back on the solar surface along an active region loop, in agreement with our model.
