Abstract: This review summarizes progress in the laboratory investigation of carbonaceous dust analogs. After introducing the fundamental properties of solid carbon allotropes, production routes and means of characterization of carbonaceous grains are discussed. Spectroscopic features of carbonaceous dust analogs are of special interest in astronomy. They will be related to the structural properties of the material. We will also discuss the far-infrared properties of carbonaceous grains.
