Abstract: Astronomical imaging data often contain structures with a very broad range of angular scales, where the features with the smaller scales are usually fainter than the surrounding extended brightness distribution. The separation of the small-scale structures of interest from the unwanted large-scale emission requires either a direct measurement of the latter or algorithms to produce a smooth version of the acquired data, which no longer contain the features of interest. In each case, the difference image will give a much more detailed view of structures on small scales. Several methods to produce a smooth approximation for the extended emission are described, which provide a way to extract small-scale structures for a variety of imaging data.
