Abstract: After giving a short overview of the instrument characteristics of the second generation VLT instrument MUSE, we discuss properties of the data will look like and present challenges and goals of its data reduction software. It is conceived as a number of pipeline recipes to be run in an automated way within the ESO data flow system. These recipes are based on a data reduction library that is being written in the C language using ESO's CPL API. We give a short overview of the steps needed for reduction and post-processing of science data, discuss requirements of a future visualization tool for integral field spectroscopy and close with the timeline for MUSE and its data reduction pipeline.
