Abstract: I briefly summarize the problems with current accretion disk models of AGN, and stress the need for detailed empirical guidance from SDSS on how the continuum spectral energy distribution depends on black hole mass and Eddington ratio. I also describe recent, first-principles physics work on the dynamics and thermodynamics of the inner, most luminous parts of the accretion flow, fully incorporating the effects of diffusive photon transport. I comment briefly on the implications of this work for observed spectra in the optical/ultraviolet/X-ray regions of AGN.
