Abstract: The UCDs (Unified Content Descriptors) are a standardized vocabulary used to describe astronomical quantities and related concepts. One limitation is that there is no formal representation structure (with a syntax and a semantics) describing the relationships and dependencies between the words, and it is not possible to perform automated reasoning on UCDs. We present here a tentative ontology of UCDs, associating advanced semantics to the UCD words. We discuss the application of this work to the problem of associating UCDs to descriptions of astronomical catalogues.
