Abstract: Starball was conceived as a means of connecting planetarium audiences to the night sky in an imaginative, interactive way. Developed at the Smith Planetarium at Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Starball challenges each live audience to forget the “official” constellations and create original ones based on their own experiences and dreams. This paper details the philosophy behind the show and the specific planetarium and theater methods the performers employ to create an environment where such active participation is possible.
