Abstract: The New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) is a 1 m vacuum solar telescope. The main tasks of NVST are high resolution imaging and spectral observations, including the measurements of solar magnetic field. The Chinese Giant Solar Telescope (CGST) is the next generation ground-based solar telescope proposed by Chinese solar community. The differences between NVST and CGST are not only the differences of performance parameters but also the differences of science goals and the differences in design concepts. In this paper, the information of NVST and CGST are first introduced, including the science goals, the basic structures and typical instruments. Then, the general design principles of the next generation large solar telescope are discussed based on the comparisons and analyses.
