Abstract: LOFAR, the World's largest radio telescope, combines signals from 52 antenna stations distributed in The Netherlands and across Europe. Its operations face crucial technical and operational challenges related to recording, transporting, processing, storing, and sharing 'big data'. These are presented and discussed in this paper, along with the lessons learned during the past seven years of successful observing. These will be referenced to next generation radio astronomical facilities.
