Abstract: Do online active learning tools improve learning in online or hybrid open education general astronomy survey classes? Having created modular online lectures coupled to the OpenStax Astronomy textbook for students taking General Astronomy, at the community college level, I found, using YouTube statistics and analysis tools and from informal conversation with students, that the students who use the lecture videos, as described in the syllabus, learn the most, as judged by assessment. So, how can I encourage all students to use the videos to promote success for all students, especially considering that students don't necessarily do the required reading and there is no way to confirm or enforce this. My solution is giving active learning exercises and required active learning homework assignments that are embedded directly into the lecture videos. Thus, to accomplish the homework, the lecture videos must be used. I will present some examples of this approach as applied to the lecture material. I also created video introductions for some of the simulation tools that have been made freely available to the astronomy education community, e.g. PhET and UNL tools, because some of them aren't as self-explanatory to those who may be less likely to “play around” with the tools to figure out how to use and understand them as some others. Additionally, since the class is offered in a fully asynchronous and remote form as well, I'll also briefly demonstrate how this approach is used in the required class labs.
