Abstract: This paper addresses the need for stronger educational efforts by science organizations such as research facilities and universities. While individuals in STEM organizations can play important roles in improving educational efforts of their organization, we focus here on the organizations themselves and how they allocate their resources for education. There is a need today for STEM-centered organizations to contribute more to the science education system, which is under severe stress. We describe our “3+5 Plan,” a blueprint for the stewardship of local education systems. Our paper can be summarized by this quotation from Seneca: “If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable.”
