From viral dances to cat memes, social media is driven by trends. How many of these came to be remains a mystery, and some may have you asking, “Why?” Social trends engage audiences and help bring out creativity in those participating. But one thing is certain—they come and go quickly. If you don’t hop on a trend or meme when you see it making its rounds on social media, you may lose the opportunity to take part or risk appearing out-of-date/out-of-touch to your audience if you join late.
Connecting astrophysics to trends helps make technical content more relatable. Sharing this content with eye-catching imagery from various astrophysics missions helps captivate the audience more.
In this presentation, we discussed how we keep up with social media trends on NASA Universe's social media accounts, managed by the NASA Goddard AstroComms Team, which serves as the agency's thematic astrophysics social media presence. We discussed the considerations that go into how we choose trends and memes and what we do in response to them. |
