Abstract: The instrument reference database (IRDB) is an open source digital space for collecting files which describe the optical characteristics of visual and infrared instruments, telescopes and observatory locations. It can be found on GitHub: github.com/AstarVienna/irdb. Files contained in the optical system packages within the IRDB include, but are not limited to, descriptions of the PSF models, transmission curves, detector array dimensions, general physical characteristics, analytical and/or numerical descriptions of optical aberrations, etc. The IRDB uses only a handful of file formats to describe the characteristics of optical systems: ASCII tables, YAML dictionaries, FITS files. This ensures readability by both humans and machines. Subpackages may follow a predefined file structure if the author wishes the package to be compatible and importable by ScopeSim, however this is not a requirement for inclusion in the IRDB.
