Abstract: |
The European Space Agency (ESA) has achieved a significant milestone
in space exploration data management by registering over 30,000 Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) since 2021 through the efforts of the ESA Science Data Center (ESDC).
This initiative, aimed at providing a permanent and unique identifier for each dataset
within the ESA Science Archives, enhances traceability of datasets. However, challenges arise in determining the “DOI-worthiness” of extensive datasets, requiring the
definition of appropriate categorization levels. ESA has addressed these challenges by
developing a flexible and scalable tool to handle diverse data formats and accessing
methods. Notably, the introduction of the ESA DOI TAP Service represents a technological advancement, streamlining the resolution of DOIs associated with specific
proposals or experiments through the Table Access Protocol (TAP). This service underscores ESA’s commitment to technological innovation, improving dataset accessibility,
and fostering collaboration within the scientific community. |
