| Abstract: |
Attracting people's attention in the general media is difficult because popular science pieces often have to compete with pieces on topics of much more immediate interest and on more tangible issues. I will share my experience working with glossy mainstream magazines in my native country of Bulgaria, where popular astronomy articles often share a page with the astrology column. I argue that the key to successfully relaying scientific knowledge is presenting it as a story of human successes, struggles, and endeavors. The use of vivid language, clear illustrations, and familiar examples are other important components of accessible presentations on popular science. We must step out of our comfort zones and take our scientific outreach to audiences that may not be friendly, but with enough patience and effort, we can plant within them interest in research and inquisitive questions. |
