Abstract: In attempting to establish the distance scale of the extragalactic universe, Hubble considered a large number of different possible distance indicators. This brief review traces the history of some of these criteria and shows that many of those that Hubble rejected have actually proven to be useful contributors to the development of this difficult subject.
