Abstract: Research into the theory of chemical abundances in photospheres and circumstellar envelopes of red giants is reviewed, and the understanding of molecular abundances in both cases is discussed. Equilibrium thermodynamics permit the approximation of photospheric molecular abundances, and the abundances in circumstellar shells are related to time-dependent chemical reactions. The intermediate layers of red giants are theorized to affect molecular equilibria because of the probability of interactions between molecules and the dynamics of the gas.
