Abstract: The CTIO 4-m telescope and an 800 x 800 TI CCD were used to obtain images in the U, BJ, and R bands, reaching a limiting surface brightness of 29 mag/sq arcsec. The U-BJ and BJ-R colors of a typical galaxy are only slightly redder than constant F(nu); the colors become bluer toward fainter magnitudes. It is suggested that, if the light from blue galaxies is dominated by star formation, there are enough of them to explain all the heavy elements seen in the present universe.
