Abstract: JPEG 2000, the new International Standard for still image compression, has many unique features that offer advantages for users of astronomical data. It is capable of both lossless and lossy compression, selectable by the user on command. When used for on-board compression, the algorithm can be configured for low-memory requirements. In archives of large data sets, a compressed file can be reordered without decoding. Efficient software and hardware implementations are currently under development.
