Abstract: In this paper, we describe a method for reconstructing multiwavelength Cepheid light curves based on principal component analysis. The technique can be applied to estimate mean I and V magnitudes, extinction corrections and true distance moduli from sparsely-sampled, noisy data. The method compares favourably with existing `template fitting' techniques, and in addition can be used as a robust estimator of the Cepheid period. We also discuss the use of light curve shape as an additional parameter to reduce the scatter of the PL relation.
