Abstract: A systematic search for nearby star clusters and associations was made, using Hipparcos proper motion and parallax data. The search was limited to parallaxes above 2~mas. Next to 30 known clusters and 6 known associations, a number of previously unknown clusterings were detected. Two associations, in the Carina-Vela and Cepheus-Cygnus-Lyra-Vulpecula regions, were found at distances of about 300 pc. The detections of the unknown nearby open clusters are less secure. Among ten candidate clusters only one, around the star a~Car, appears to be an indisputable new detection. If this detection can be confirmed, then the system of open clusters has been enriched by an additional young (60 Myr) and nearby (d=132 pc) member. However, even this possible cluster with only seven bona fide members requires a comprehensive study to draw conclusive evidence.
