Paper: High Velocity Bipolar Outflow from the Carbon Star V Hydrae Imaged with the SubMillimeter Array

Abstract: Using the partially completed Submillimeter Array (SMA) with five antennas, we have observed the CO J=2−1 and 3−2 emission from the envelope surrounding the AGB carbon star V Hydrae. The high resolution (3–6") maps show the spectacular features of the molecular envelope surrounding V Hydrae; there is a pair of bipolar molecular jets in the east-west direction with an extreme high velocity of 100–150 km s−1. The axis of these high velocity jets is perpendicular to the major axis of the flattened envelope having a size of ~4000 AU. The present results suggest that the high-velocity, well-collimated jet that will be responsible for producing the bipolar nebula appears at the very beginning of post-AGB evolution.
