Abstract: We present the results of applying rigorous maximum-likelihood CMD inversion methods, coupled with a variational calculus approach to CMDs derived from the HIPPARCOS satellite. Our method allows an objective determination of the underlying star formation history, SFR(t). We obtain a star formation history for the solar neighbourhood which shows an important cyclic component, having a period consistent with it being the result of repeated encounters with the Galactic arm density pattern.
