Abstract: We review the fundamental ideas which are under current use to model flares and other non-stationary phenomena in the solar atmosphere. Recent multi-wavelength observations of solar flares allow us to improve a theory of solar-type flares, which can be applied to many astrophysical phenomena accompanied by fast plasma ejection, powerful fluxes of radiation, and the acceleration of electrons and ions to high energies.
