Abstract: We discuss the problem of the limit on the accretion rate onto a black hole. To understand the observed spectral features of potentially supercritical accretion flows (accretion above the classical Eddington limit) in ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) and active galactic nuclei (AGN), we calculate spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of highly accreting black holes with masses in the range of 10 to 108 M⊙, surrounded by an accretion disk and an extended atmosphere. Continuum features like the peak intensity of thermal emission at 1 keV as well as the iron K line complex between 6 keV and 8 keV are analyzed for various inclination angles, central masses and accretion rates. Both line and continuum emission depend considerably on these parameters, offering a chance to estimate these often unknown quantities of observed accretion disk systems.
