Abstract: We present data on the stellar kinematics of the face-on barred spiral galaxy NGC 1291, and compare them with expectations from numerical simulations. We find that the bar in NGC 1291 is not very strong, and could have been formed in a situation where the disk of the galaxy is relatively massive compared to the dark halo. This is reinforced by an analysis of photometric data.
