Abstract: Far-UV observations have become extremely important since the launch of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) in 1978. The work has been continued in recent years with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). However, neither of these instruments covers the important 900-1150Å wavelength range which gives access to the Lyman series of hydrogen lines and metal lines of species and ionization stages that are not accessible at longer wavelengths. In this paper, we discuss use of the Lyman series lines to determine the temperature and surface gravity of hot white dwarfs and the importance of this for the study of white dwarfs in binary systems.
