Abstract: We study one-dimensional motion of a self-gravitating gas, which is contained in a flat layer of finite thickness 2h. We described two typical regimes of compression: a quasi-periodic mode of establishing equilibrium with h much smaller that the Jeans length λJ and a rapid compression mode with h ≥ λJ.
