Abstract: Double-peaked Balmer line profiles in the optical (together with some Fe Kα profiles in the X-rays) provide the strongest evidence for disk emission in AGN to date. Using a large new sample of double-peaked Hα lines selected from SDSS spectroscopy we characterize the properties of the disk emission candidates and seek to constrain the parameters of accretion disks consistent with the observed profile shapes. We find that the hosts of double-peaked AGN have medium luminosities (~ 1044 erg/s) indistinguishable from the majority of AGN at the same redshifts, are more likely to be radio sources and to have stronger forbidden low-ionization lines like [OI]6300, and possess the broadest Balmer lines. About half of the observed line shapes are inconsistent with simple axisymmetric emitting rings, and require some form of asymmetry (e.g., hot spots, spiral waves).
