Abstract: In recent years interest has developed in using focused transport theory to model the acceleration of energetic charged particles at heliospheric shocks in more detail than possible with the standard Parker transport equation. However, this equation has some limitations when applied to nearly perpendicular shocks related to the assumption of nearly gyrotropic particle phase-angle distributions. Here we present the outline of a derivation of a more general form of the standard focused transport equation and discuss its features.
