Abstract: The W. M. Keck Observatory has started a multi-year project to develop a unified observing infrastructure encompassing the steps of preparing, executing, reducing and archiving astronomical data. In many ways this is similar to building a queue observing system, with the important difference that we will still rely on observers physically present and running the observations: the best of two worlds. We are developing Phase 2 tools, APIs to the observing database, planning and observation control tools, and a common data reduction framework. We also plan to serve raw data in real time from the Keck Observatory Archive, and reduced data shortly after. Among other things, this project will enable fast, automatic observations in response to events triggered by gravitational waves observations and survey telescopes.
