| Abstract: |
Youth organizations such as scouts and 4-H offer an excellent opportunity to get children involved in Citizen Science at a young age. In Spring of 2022, SUNY Oneonta collaborated with multiple 4-H organizations in upstate NY to host an Earth and Space Science Exploration day. This event introduced middle school-aged students to current scientific research and encouraged them to observe science in their everyday life. Through hands-on activities based on NISE Network Earth and Space Toolkits, visitors explored different concepts related to night sky observing, light pollution, and climate change. A workbook was developed for each visitor to take home that included opportunities for them to participate in Citizen Science projects through the Globe at Night, Globe Observer, and Zooniverse programs. The overall goal of the event and workbook was to help students connect their real-world experiences with current scientific questions and challenges and encourage them to participate in Citizen Science projects at home. In this paper, we summarize our experience with the program, share the workbook, and discuss plans for improving future events. |
