Abstract: ACCESS – “Absolute Color Calibration Experiment for Standard Stars” is a proposed series of rocket-borne sub-orbital missions and ground-based experiments that will establish the absolute flux for a set of three primary standard stars using calibrated detectors as the fundamental metrology reference. These experiments are designed to obtain an absolute spectrophotometric calibration accuracy of <1% in the 0.35–1.7 μm bandpass at a spectral resolution greater than 500 by directly tracing the observed stellar fluxes to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) irradiance standards. Transfer of the NIST detector standards to the bright stars Vega and Sirius with an accuracy of <1% will produce an absolute calibration of these historic standards in physical units. The primary purpose of this spectroscopy-based experiment is to provide the first step in the fundamental color calibration required by type SNe Ia observations obtained in pursuit of understanding the nature of Dark Energy.
