Abstract: Our analysis of a series of 8-GHz VLBI images of the blazar 0059+581 together with integrated light curves from 8 to 37 GHz for 1994-2002 suggests the occurrence of quasi-periodic flares approximately every two years. There is evidence that alternating flares are optically thick (associated with the core) and optically thin (associated with the jet). This, in turn, suggests that the duration of the entire cycle of the quasi-periodic activity is ∼ 4 years, with two peaks per cycle. One possible scenario is that the first peak is associated with a disturbance at the base of the jet, while the second is associated with the evolution of the disturbance as it propagates down the jet flow.
