Abstract: Spectral line observations of the inner regions of planet-forming disks may provide valuable insight into the processes that govern the formation of planets. This contribution reviews our current understanding of the physical conditions in disks around young stars at distances less than a few AU, focusing in particular on results obtained from high resolution infrared spectroscopy.
