Abstract: We detect a fast outflow of gas in the central region of the nearby starburst radio galaxy 3C 293. The outflow is detected both in the optical emission lines of ionized gas as well as in HI absorption against the radio continuum. The broad HI absorption feature (observed with the recently upgraded Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope using a 20 MHz bandwidth) has a full width of 1400 km/s at zero intensity, of which 1000 km/s is blueshifted with respect to the systemic velocity. It represents one of the most extreme cases of neutral gas outflow ever detected in the central region of a radio galaxy. From the optical analysis we favor the idea that this outflow is created by the interaction of the inner radio jet with a surrounding dense ISM. However, the possibility that the outflow is caused by super-winds from a recent starburst event cannot be completely ruled out.
