| Abstract: |
The study of the galactic halo and thick disk has given valuable input to theories of galaxy formation. Comparisons between these populations in the Milky Way and in other galaxies are important before we can safely generalize to other galaxies. The study of thick disk and halo field stars outside the Local Group has been very difficult in the past because of the extreme faintness of these populations. The development of a new technique of deep CCD surface photometry which has made this possible for the first time is described, and the structural properties of the Milky Way halo and thick disk are compared with those of other nearby spiral galaxies. |
