| Abstract: |
The Gemini Interlock System (GIS) is based upon a collection of Allen-Bradley I/O crates controlled by a single PLC-5 programmable logic controller. The GIS monitors the status of a large number of devices and, based upon the current status, either enables or disables specific devices in order to protect people and machinery. EPICS is a convenient tool for communicating with the PLC since it is event-driven and has extensive capability for alarms, including reporting severity and logging. The modular nature of EPICS and its ease of setup and configuration help to make it the natural choice for the GIS. |
