| Abstract: |
This paper reviews current ideas concerning the planetary formation process. An order of magnitude discussion is presented, concentrating on the principal concepts that comprise present models. The overall accretion process can be partitioned into three stages, each dominated by different mechanisms and/or styles of accumulation. Characteristic time scales are estimated for each stage and compared with the probable lifetime of the primordial nebula. Several ideas for shortening or eliminating the slow, problematic late-stage are discussed. |
